Why you need to know how to make an Audio CD

November 14th, 2010

You hear about it all the time - how easy it is to make your own audio product and sell it. But making an audio CD can be easier said than done but after you read this information, you’ll be able to do it over and over again.

So let’s focus on making an audio CD if you are a speaker or author that wishes to take an mp3 recording and publish it to a CD so you can have it duplicated and out for sale.

First it is assumed that you already have an audio recording on some topic that you have previously recorded. Otherwise, you would need to come up with some way to record whatever your content is. But for now if you have an mp3 file, you’re good.

Now, this is a step a lot of first time authors forget, take a moment and determine how you want your customers to play your CD. Do you want them to play it on a cd player? in their cars?  on their computer? on their ipod player?

These may sound like obvious questions but you need to know this because it has an impact on your master format.

If you want the discs you publish to play on a CD player you need to provide a master than already is set up to do that. If you simply copy over the mp3 to a blank disc like you would a PDF file, then you do NOT have an audio disc you have a CD-ROM. It will play in a computer and on some CD players that read mp3 but they will not play like an audio disc in a standard CD player.

All is not lost, you just need a little help and it may be as close as your computer. Its as simple as opening up iTunes, importing your mp3 into its own playlist and then telling iTunes to burn your disc for a music CD. Follow the instructions on your screen whether you are on a windows or mac, the program does allow you to make copies of your own sound recordings that you made.

Often this is referred to as a poor man’s way to make an audio master because you have saved the expense of having to go to a studio. But for most teleseminars and other projects where studio quality sound isn’t a selling point, this works perfectly.

So now you have your audio master and you’re ready to either start making them yourself (not recommended) or sending them to a profession cd dvd duplication service to have them copied.
