Uses of Fragrance Oils

October 1st, 2010

Frequently, fragrance oils have been used as a scenting agent for beauty products, as well as many household products like potpourri and room fresheners. Fragrance oils are often extracted from various sources, and can also be chemically made to represent certain plants and other organic material. Fragrance oils can also be extracted from certain plants and organic materials, depending on the plants ability to release these oils.

Steam distillation is a common process used to extract the fragrance oils from the plants or flowering parts of plants, as well as from other organic materials. After the organic material has been distilled, two very different types of liquids are seen – in the distiller the liquid at the top of the bottle will be something called essential oil, and the liquid at the bottom of the container will be the distilled water of the plant. The color of these liquids will depend on the sugar content of the plant or organic material used.

Fragrance oils are very commonly used in a variety of products. They have long been used in candles, potpourri’s and soaps. These small items can make great gifts because they cna be added to many products that are used daily, like soaps and perfumes, or even candles. If wanting to make products using fragrance oils it can be a little intimidating to start out, but starting with melt and pour soaps and candles can be really fun. After conquering these hobbies you will find that you can start adding fragrance oils to many more projects and crafts.

Important to note is the fact that people who enjoy soaps and perfumes are usually looking for unique and wonderful new scents. Very frequently soaps that are too strong smelling or too weak smelling aren’t desired by customers and can deter people from purchasing your natural beauty soaps and products. Because of this fact scenting is probably the most important aspect of making soaps, lotions, perfumes and candles. When choosing the types of oils you want to use it is important to also check out the properties of each. Using fragrance oil requires knowledge of mixing and using the correct dosage for each product, and make sure its diluted correctly.

Fragrance oils can be used in so many products and they give each a special and unique scent. As you can imagine, the soap and beauty world would be a pretty dull and boring place should fragrance oils not exist. So have fun, and experiment with all kinds of smells and scents!
