John asked: I am looking into opening an account with forex and I had a few questions.
I have on of their practice accounts and I like it but some times the exchange rates do not change. The rates freeze up from time to time. Why is this? Is the market closed at some time? Also is this just with my practice account or does this happen with live accounts too.
Another question is what is the minimum investment that you can start an account with and be able to trade? I know its like $250 or something, but when you trade, the smallest amount is like $100,000. I know that with leverage that can be $1,000 but is there any way to get that lower?
Thanks for any responses!

I had a forex training account that used play money, but it expired after 30 days. I have looked at several others but they all expire after 30 days as well. I don’t feel I am ready for a live account, does anyone know of a place that will allow a play account that is either not limited on time, or allows for longer than 30 days?

Do foreign gold coins (say, Canadian Maple Leafs and other countries gold coins) have 3 values to them? 1) collectors appreciation value and 2) Daily spot/market price of the gold itself and 3) the foreign exchange value. And also, do real gold coins (foreign in this case) fluctuate according to exchange rates (FOREX RATES) . It would seem to me they should have some exchange rate since they could be used as currency if you wanted to. I am not sure. Thanks

Let’s say I deposit $500 into an account. The broker gives me 200:1 leverage. What can I buy on a EURUSD exchange with that? Some brokers automatically set a 100,000 unit buy? I don’t understand…

I went to an introduction to FOREX (foreign exchange) class recently and they were telling us how with a good education in FOREX you can consistently make money, and good money too, since you are trading 50 or 100 times what you have in your trading account. The complete course is $2000 and they were pushy for us to take the class so I didn’t feel so confident about it, but i read up on the subject a bit and did a trial trade for about 30 days, I was up a lot at one point (about $8000) but in the end of the month i pretty muich broke even. WIth more knowledge and a proper education on the subject can it be a long term way of makin money?
DEAR ALL, thanks for your responses, overall you seem to think currency trading is high risk and not really a viable way of making money from home. I should have mentioned in my question that if i were to do it, i would want to rely more on technical analysis and all the ratios and different theorems etc. I would also be making trades that are from about 30 minutes to at most one day. Does this change anyones opinion on the subject?

Asmodeus asked: Well, apparently there is some element of gambling in the stock exchange/forex, but still such events are considered to depend on economical events…so fundamental analysis + technical should help you. I guess, the biggest mistake would be trading on margin/ or at least high such.
Speaking of the gambling itself, it’s really hard to predict the outcome of a random event, if not totally impossible, but still the gambler could make decisions based on static events, rather than just watching how her/his money are getting down, due to unfavorable trend…
Last, but not least, one can’t predict economical events such as a large bank buying huge amounts of EUR/USD, thus changing the trend.
I was even thinking on how to apply, paradoxes such as Parrondo or St. Petersburg in the stock trading, but the logic behind them leads me to negative conclusions.
my opinion?
Start with gambling - forex on low margin - stock indices(again low margin, if any).
Thanks!
