Flying ants are the scourge of many homes in summer months leaving many people to dread the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they expect the summer will bring
Only the unfortunates who have suffered it will know the true nature of flying ants in their own homes.
Having an infestation of ordinary wingless ants is bad enough but when they go through their annual mating phase the situation can become unthinkable.
Ants will form colonies under the floors and in the wall cavities of our homes and these colonies will continue for many years to come if left untreated and become progressively more annoying as the years go on.
Our dwellings are warm and dry and provide the ideal places for a thriving ant colony; even solid asphalt floor is not a deterent to ants.
Our house heating systems raises their metabolism even in the winter months and my earliest ant call-out was on my birthday, which falls in January!
Ants prefer a sandy soil and there are plenty areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which have more ant problems than most, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as hot ant spots.
Unfortunately it is during their mating phase that they are most irksome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this often is pretty regularly around the middle to end of July.
Ants mate in flight and around mid-summer the colony produces winged immature Queens and winged males which in nature would fly off and mate whilst flying. Many thousands of these winged ants are released from each and nests tend to time their production so that they mate with ants from nearby colonies.
Usually this process starts after a few of days of hot, dry weather and will often last for about a week although smaller releases will continue throughout most of the summer.
Unfortunately when the colony is under the floor of the home the effects can be horrifying, literally thousands of flying are released into the lower rooms, collecting on windows as they make for the light.
This can be very upsetting for some people leading to extreme emotional trauma to the level that people learn to dread the summertime and have actually sold their house to escape the plague of ants which they know will appear each summer.
The wet summers of recent years has meant that ant infestations were reduced on the preceding but ants appear to have a way of catching up and 2010 might be a particularly good year for them.
Many people who have this problem attempt for DIY solutions with potions from DIY stores etc but mostly these efforts do not succeed as they are not getting to the heart of the problem which is the colony itself, tucked safely in the cavity wall or under the floor.
Fortunately for most people help.
At Harrier Pest Prevention (subject to satisfactory site) we are able to solve this problem and issue an extendable 3 year guarantee.
The process which is carried out mainly from the exterior of the dwelling, is totally safe for animals and children and produces no smell, involves drilling little holes into the cavity walls of the property, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing an insecticidal powder into the cavity wall under pressure.
This forms an impenetrable barrier over which the ants cannot go and along with a precautionary internal spray treatment (if deemed necessary) will slowly bring the problem to its end.
The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter stay open so it is an easy matter of topping up the cavities every three years to extend the period of the guarantee in 3 year periods.
This procedure is best done out in the early spring however it can be done all year round.
As a very limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the usual cost until May 30 2010. Whilst we usually cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are able to venture further afield but this will be at extra cost.
